Devlog #1 – Floating in Space
Floating in Space
Have you ever imagined, how it would be to float in space, aimlessly drifting away with nothing that can hold you? Scarry, isn’t it? But couldn’t it also be fulfilling to explore the depth of the universe and being away from Earth in total peace and silence with yourself, far away from stress and anger of others?
The Game
As the title suggests, the Game is about an astronaut, floating in space. It’s a top-down survival game for computer, where you are lost in zero gravity and try to survive. The player can navigate the astronaut or their spaceship in two dimensions.
With only the little oxygen they have left in the tank, the first thing they have to do is to search for more oxygen in the debris of the impact. But moving around is expensive, because in the first stage, the astronaut moves by boosts of an oxygen driven engine. Later, they will be able to navigate with fuel, electricity or more advanced (alien) technologies in a spaceship they build on their way. All the while they are collecting floating items, harvesting asteroids, researching new technologies and crafting better parts and pieces for their ship. The goal is to reach a colony of your tribe, lightyears away.
It's a singleplayer game and despite the two-dimensional navigation, the game objects are produced in 3D. More about the gameplay loop will be revealed in the next Devlog.
The Mood
The overall mood gives an impression of being lost and feeling very fragile in this endless space. But at the same time, it’s a very peaceful and mysterious environment. It almost fits into the category of Cozy Games, although the difficult player navigation and some events like radiation or the absence of oxygen can make it a bit more intense at times.
The Story
Due to a horrible accident, the astronaut, which was currently working on the outside of a space station, lost its connection. But before I get into detail, just have a look at the backstory trailer I made (please note, this is no style reference): https://www.youtube.com/@FrogKin9

The Journey
Like many, I’m trying to make a living out of gamdev. Intentionally choosing one of the hardest ways possible to earn money. But at least I’m aware of it.
As a not yet fully professional game developer, I only have very limited time to work on my project. Therefore, I will only post updates once a month or less. I guess making the game is more important than talking about it in the first place. The time horizon until release is at least 12 months from now.
Please let me know what you think about all you have seen and read. I hope you enjoyed it.
